The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Troubled Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer vision.
The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
The news echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full text from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
The President
Background of the New Leader
The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your squad can secure victory? The choice is yours."
The game does not have an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as development progresses.
